High quality 1 mm stamps are used to stamp tiny but readable words around the ring. To see how small the letters are, take a look at a penny. The words "In God we Trust" are the same size. Each character is placed by hand, so there might be a slight variation in the spacing as typical for hand stamped inscriptions.
